Liv's Hawaiian Hello Kitty

Liv's birthday party was at the Aloha Spirit Bash 2012
so I went with the Hawaiian Hello Kitty theme.
I made one special Hello Kitty cupcake for the birthday girl
complete with a grass skirt.

Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Sarmiento

Welcome home Mr. & Mrs. Sarmiento!

Our friends return today after spending several weeks in Europe
where they were married in Hvar, Croatia
on Saturday, August 4th, 2012.  Unfortunately, we were not able to attend but
I wanted to do something special for them. I made some custom cookies and mailed them out two days ago
so they would be there waiting when they returned home.

I can't wait to see their professional wedding photos.. I got to peek at a few pictures on her mom's camera yesterday and everything looked gorgeous especially the bride & groom.  We are so happy for them and look forward to watching them spend the rest of their lives together.

Congratulations Mr. & Mrs!!

Soccer Cookies

Cookies are kind of like soccer.. practice makes perfect
or near perfect.  A year ago I could not have done a soccer ball cookie
without having the black bleed and my circle not be a circle.
Since then I've spent hours with royal icing and sets of cookies
and practice is making me BETTER!  Thanks to those of you that
happily ate my test cookies :)

The trick to the soccer cookies ..
Americolor edible markers!

I covered the entire cookie with white RI & allowed that to dry overnight.
The next morning I traced the hexagon in the middle of the cookie then
piped out the black lines.   Once filled I put a fan on the cookies to make sure the
black would not bleed.  I did a boston terrier cookie a few months ago and the black bled so bad so I was determined to not let this happen again.  Many cookiers (cookie decorators) have started using food dehydrators to get their cookies to dry without craters, bleeding, etc.   You can read Georgeanne's post on her blog LilaLoa and what she has to say about dehydrators.  I don't own one nor do I have a place to store one so I will stick with a fan when needed.  It's working good enough for me.

Sushi anyone?

My grandparents have made friends with some people in the harbor that own a Sushi restaurant.  A few weeks ago Grams told me that they sold their restaurant and were moving up the coast to run a hotel. She wanted to do something for them because they are such nice people.  I told her I'd take care of it and started working on fondant Sushi to put on top of cupcakes.  I took the cupcakes to her yesterday and she loved them.    This was a challenge for me because I don't care for sushi so I had to use Google images as my inspiration.   I cut blocks of fondant, then coated the white fondant with royal icing.  While the icing was still wet I rolled each piece in coconut to simulate rice.

We wish them the best of luck with their new business..
They will be missed around the harbor by their customers & friends.

Ezren's 2nd Birthday

Happy 2nd Birthday Ezren!

Nothing makes me happier than hearing a child say "WOW" when he sees his birthday treats.  Ezren gave me a big WOW when I pulled out the shark cookie (which is actually  fish cutter with a fin cut off).  I think it's safe to say the Shark was his favorite.   When I got to the Ball and asked "Do you know what this is?", he replied, "an OOOOOOO".  hmmm.. how about a beach ball?
I didn't have a surfboard cutter or a shark cutter (one's on it's way to me now)
so I improvised with a circle cutter for the surfboard. I gently bent it so it was the shape of a surfboard and it worked perfect.

I sprayed the sharks with Duff's graffiti spray once the royal icing was dry
so they shimmered when the light hit them. I cut the 1st fin off the top of the cookie so he'd be shark-like.
